Images of the True North come back to historic JEH MacDonald House

  • THORNHILL – The Ontario Plein Air Society Canadian Landscape Show, November 12–14, 2010, for the first time brings almost 100 Canadian landscape paintings to public view from fourteen of Ontario’s leading landscape painters at the JEH MacDonald House in Thornhill.

The show kicks off Friday, November 12 when OPAS (Ontario Plein Air Society) invites art lovers to join them at their opening night party. Many of the artists will be there to talk about their works. Every work is also for sale. The show continues Saturday 10 – 8 pm and Sunday 10 – 5 pm. On Saturday and Sunday artists will be painting in the garden where JEH MacDonald painted his famous “Tangled Garden”.

“We chose to pay homage to the Group of Seven by exhibiting at the JEH MacDonald house. Every Canadian plein air painter feels a connection with their iconic images.” Said Zan Barrage of Mississauga and founding member of OPAS. “Our works are not imitative of the Group of Seven, We each have our style and our own ways of interpreting the landscape, but we draw inspiration from their history and feel a part of the great Canadian tradition of painting directly from nature”.

OPAS is a society of Ontario landscape painters who are focused on depicting the grandeur and immensity of the True North. They do so in spontaneous and dynamic images that reflect the magnificence of Canada in general and Ontario in specific in both its urban landscape and its wilderness. By choosing to interpret nature en plein air, facing the elements and feeling at one with the Canadian landscape, they seek to capture its vitality and inner poetry.

At a time when the heightened awareness of the fragile nature of our planet has captured public concern, they offer a new voice for the Canadian environment by depicting its splendor and character in paint.

The media are invited to attend the opening night show, meet the artists and discover the depth of talent resident in the community.
