Plein Air Viewfind(ing)

  • I’m sure many of you use viewfinders, and some of you are lucky with your visual perception to not need a viewing aid for your composition.  I’ve tried a few, made one, and they work fine, but I’ve broken them, and found them to be a bit of a pain in the butt when hauling around with the rest of the gear.  Over the summer I tried to figure how to add the grid that appears on my iPhone camera (using the Microsoft Pix app) to the image output. It’s just not possible.  I then searched for an “art”, or photo, app that would show a grid on a picture, and I only found one called “GRID#”.  I downloaded the free version (ads appear at the bottom of the app’s screen), and it worked nicely.  Take a picture of your composition, then maybe do a bit of cropping in edit mode, start GRID# and load the edited picture, and viola, and grid appears on the picture.  This made the layout of a complex composition much easier and faster for me.  You can change the thickness and colour of the grid lines, and the number of rows and columns to what you’re comfortable with using (I like a basic 3 x 3 setup).  I’m at a point now where I may buy the app as I’ve found it useful.  Just thought I’d pass along a new artist tool, and just so you know, I have NO affiliation with the app developer at all.  I just found it a good app for my use.  There may be more Apps out there now, but I’ll keep GRID# for as long as it’s available.  I’m sorry, I don’t know if it is available for Android phones.

Keith Thirgood Thomas, if you like the look of that umbrella, we could go in together and order two. That way we would get free shipping. Then one of us could pick up their umbrella from the other. Just a thought.

Thomas Faires Thanks for the comments. The app actually came in handy when I was painting for the first time at the Rouge River Meander... I was a bit overwhelmed with the 360° compositions, it was incredibly hot and sunny so I figured I wouldn’t last to long, and I ha...  more

Thomas Faires Keith, I was thinking about visiting the old Woolfits location to see what they have on hand. I want to see one up close. I don’t think the clamp one will work for me since I switched to a much lighter easel (my Julian was just too heavy), but maybe the s...  more

Thomas Faires Keith, I couldn't find an umbrella at Woolfits or Deserres or Above Ground.. but I'm not sure what to buy yet. If you want to take advantage of cyber-Monday, you might as well go ahead. Maybe other members might be interested in going in on a multi-purchase.
